I left full time teaching in the summer of 2021 to set up my own tutoring business. Taking the leap to become self-employed through online tutoring was undoubtedly a risky move, even with a small client base already established. Questions loomed in my mind: Would I be able to sustain a sufficient income? Could I find tutees in an increasingly saturated market? 

Thankfully, I found my place in the market and I have loved every part of the journey, from tutoring a handful of students based in the UK to now offering tutoring and mentoring to students worldwide. I love that no two days are the same. From delving into Othello with a tutee from Singapore in the morning to immersing myself in A Christmas Carol with a student closer to home in London during the afternoon, the breadth of experiences is invigorating and I never get bored. 

One of the perks of my current profession is the autonomy it affords. I have the freedom to choose my own hours and take time off as needed. My partner lives in Sweden, so I spend a lot of my time in Gothenburg. Being able to tutor remotely means it’s not a problem, so I truly get the best of both worlds. 

Over the last year or so, lots of teachers have reached out to me seeking advice on transitioning from teaching to tutoring. My response has been consistent: go for it. Admittedly, I occasionally miss the camaraderie of adult interactions and the shared moments in the staff room, where we would seek solace during breaks. I miss those in-between teaching instances—taking children to the library and nurturing their love for books, witnessing the culmination of their hard work during school plays, and actively participating in house events, feeling part of a vibrant community. However, I wouldn’t trade my current lifestyle for anything. It’s not just the freedom from alarms or the cosy evenings by the fire with a good book as winter takes hold. It’s the deep contentment that permeates all aspects of my life.
