Aster Tuition Course13+ Common Entrance

About usGuiding students to help them achieve their best. We provide your child with the tools they will need to succeed.

We provide your child with the tools required to achieve the highest results as discover further education.

Many of the UK’s top Senior Schools require Common Entrance at Year 9 entry. We provide tutoring to support with the English Exam. The syllabus has changed from 2022 so students will be expected to sit one reading paper and one writing paper.

The reading element of the exam focuses on the student’s ability to understand an unseen text, which may be poetry, prose or drama. To that end, our tutoring sessions focus on an array of texts from different genres, time periods and styles of writing. We believe in giving children the opportunity to engage with writing that inspires them and also gives them a firm foundation for success in the exams. Beyond this though, our 13+ sessions are the building blocks for success at GCSE.

The writing paper aims to assess a student’s ability to use clear, precise language and write for a variety of purposes. They will be expected to use a wide-ranging vocabulary and demonstrate an understanding of the effect they wish to have on the reader. During our tutoring lessons, we will give students the opportunity to write for a number of different purposes, including: writing to entertain, to advise, to inform, to argue etc. Again, these writing skills are not only to prepare your child for Common Entrance, but to also give them the foundations for success at GCSE.

COURSESWorkshops

Our comprehensive workshops cover the skills needed for success at 13+. We run four blocks of four workshops at a time, each one covering a different theme. Children can attend more than one block over the course of an academic year as the content will be different for each one.

Block 1: War and Peace
Block 2: Literary Villains
Block 3: The Gothic
Block 4: Dystopia

After each workshop, children will be given homework to complete at home. This will then be marked by the teacher and feedback will be shared so children understand next steps. At the end of each four week block of learning, parents will receive detailed written feedback on their child’s progress. This is one of the cornerstones of Aster Tuition’s methodology so that parents are included in their child’s learning and every element of our teaching process is transparent.
Children will also take home a pack of resources to continue practising key skills once the workshops have finished.

Class sIze: We regularly run workshops which are for a maximum of four children, which makes our teacher/student ratio one of the highest of its kind.

Workshop length: Each workshop is run over four consecutive weeks and will cover the main areas needed for this course. Each four week workshop is based around a different topic.

Price: £160
