Many of the UK’s top Senior Schools require Common Entrance at Year 9 entry. We provide tutoring to support with the English Exam. The syllabus has changed from 2022 so students will be expected to sit one reading paper and one writing paper.
The reading element of the exam focuses on the student’s ability to understand an unseen text, which may be poetry, prose or drama. To that end, our tutoring sessions focus on an array of texts from different genres, time periods and styles of writing. We believe in giving children the opportunity to engage with writing that inspires them and also gives them a firm foundation for success in the exams. Beyond this though, our 13+ sessions are the building blocks for success at GCSE.
The writing paper aims to assess a student’s ability to use clear, precise language and write for a variety of purposes. They will be expected to use a wide-ranging vocabulary and demonstrate an understanding of the effect they wish to have on the reader. During our tutoring lessons, we will give students the opportunity to write for a number of different purposes, including: writing to entertain, to advise, to inform, to argue etc. Again, these writing skills are not only to prepare your child for Common Entrance, but to also give them the foundations for success at GCSE.
